Coaching Corner: Put down that bag of chips

As we move through this crazy time, I am seeing certain behavior patterns, both within myself and my coaching clients. One of the more prevalent ones is how we are spending our time. Personally, I have always felt the need to be spending my time more purposefully. Having said that, I am also seeing that during this time, I have found myself unnecessarily in front of the television set with nothing specific that I want to watch.

Now, I am not going to judge myself or anyone else for this, however, noticing this pattern is extremely helpful in getting back to a great feeling space. Because, the other piece that I noticed is that I do not feel good when I do this, although the not so great feeling doesn’t usually present itself until much later after the show has been turned off.

Where am I going with this you may be wondering? I am looking more closely how I (and others), are feeding into the malaise of this current time by not paying attention to how we are spending our precious time. We need to bring more awareness into what actions we are taking throughout our days. Now, more than ever, we cannot tune out. We need to bring our consciousness into those activities that bring us joy and fulfillment.

It is easy to go into default mode right now. It may be television, or it may be food. We hear frequently about the poundage that has occurred during this time. It’s time to take stock of where you are right now and decide throughout the day if you are spending your time in alignment with your own values. This isn’t hard--it merely requires attention. So turn off that TV and put down that bag of chips!
