Coaching Corner: Snow day!

Coaching Corner: Snow day!

This all came about last night during my weekly Mahjong game (that's another story). One of the players is a teacher and another a student — as we played, looking out my back window, the snow began to fall...and fall...and fall...

The two of them were beside themselves — snow day, snow day, snow day became their mantra. I actually won a fair amount of the games last night due to their attention to the potential of missing school today! I did not share in their enthusiasm, thinking of how my day might become more difficult with that white coating on the ground. And, you see, I have a case of post traumatic snow syndrome! Some of you know that I have two sets of twin boys, two years apart. At the time that they were babies, my ex-husband's company would snow plow in the winter. When the white stuff would begin to fall, he would be gone — sometimes for one day but usually for more. When he did finally come home, he would sleep for endless hours while I would try to quiet the tiny troops. See what I mean — snow trauma!

So, listening to the two enthusiasts last night actually became a moment of enlightenment! I started to get snow day fever — oh yes, I remember — no school, the scheduled test would not happen, I would have endless play time with my friends. Yeah, this is exciting! I recaptured long ago delight that had not surfaced in a very long time!

So...after all of that, how can YOU find the pure delight and excitement that may be buried for you? It may be about your memories of a snow day or something else that generates a feeling of excitement for you. Sometimes we need to consciously take the time to do this. What does delight feel like to you? Pure joy? Let yourself, right now, take a moment and feel it. When we can think about events (past or current), or people that create that feeling for us, it sets the tone of our day in the present. This is actually one tool that takes minimal time and has great impact!

Now doesn't that feel better?
