Coaching Corner: Clean Up!
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
Do you know the children’s song used by parents to hopefully inspire their young ones to put away their toys that are scattered around the house? If not, the words are “Clean up, clean up, everybody do their share, clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere.” This song has been playing over and over in my mind for reasons unknown!
As we are in the latter part of the year, I find it an appropriate time to examine your personal space and determine what works and what doesn’t, in eager anticipation of moving into the new year with a clean physical environment. This may be your home, your car, or your office. Have you noticed the influx of storage units around? I remember when there were just a handful, and now, they seem to be popping up on every corner. What does that tell you? What is so important that people spend money to move things they don’t use (and probably don’t need) into a separate storage place? (Having posed that question, there are real reasons why some require storage units as necessary.)
This is a topic that I tend to hit on at some point towards the end of each year, mainly due to my own appreciation of moving unwanted or unneeded items out and enjoying the spaciousness it provides. Many clients tell me how their individual businesses increased by cleaning and clearing their offices, including files. Now, I cannot give you any rationale as to why or how this occurs, and yet, it definitely does seem to work that way.
Today, get your own “clean up” underway. You can begin one of two ways—you can make a list of what needs to happen and then work from there, or you can just dive in! Either way, be easy with this; start small and let the momentum build. Perhaps, you may even find yourself humming along to “Clean up, clean up…”
