Coaching Corner: Where is Your Dial?
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
One of the main premises of coaching is that each of us has our own best answers. Yes, each of us has within us the ability to navigate the waters of our life. You may be shaking your head in denial at this point, or you may be wondering how this magical feat can come into play in your own life.
Here’s how it’s done:
To access these often elusive answers, we must be in a place internally where we can actually hear those answers. If you are filling your brain with countless “to-dos,” judgments, and similar distracting thoughts, you will not have the awareness required to be tuned in. However, if you allow yourself to move into appreciation and put your attention more on what you want rather than what you see that you don’t like, your answers will become easy to find.
Some of you may remember back in 2018 when a boys' soccer team in Thailand was trapped in a cave for quite some time. The boys' coach had tremendous experience with meditation, which he presented to the boys to help them through this very difficult time. Establishing a practice of mindfulness can assist each of us in countless ways. The process is simple and easily learned. For example, take a moment to follow your breath as it slowly moves through you….in….out. Just this focused exercise will calm your body as well as your mind.
When you can get yourself more into a state of calm, you will be tuned into you and your own inspired thoughts. Most of us think about what we want and then move directly to GO! I promise that when you get yourself into a better feeling place and allow the inspired actions to come to you, it is truly more productive than DO, DO, DO and GO, GO, GO! You will still be doing and going, although from a much calmer and efficient place. Taking a few deep, intentional breaths is an excellent place to begin this shift.
Think of yourself as a radio dial. You can only access a station by shifting your dial. Where is your dial set?
