Coaching Corner: Ready to Let Go of That?
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
Today, we explore the mechanics of decluttering our environment of items no longer relevant in our lives. Ready?
First, let’s focus on your home. Grab a notebook of some kind, something that is not too small, along with something to write with. With these in hand, slowly walk through your home with a very discerning eye, identifying the places where clutter has accumulated. No shame here, it happens to the vast majority of us at some time or another. As you write these items down, break them into small bits. For example, do not put “kitchen” on your list; this is definitely not small enough. Break it down as much as you need to, even each drawer and cabinet separately. There is no grade that will happen here for you, just a creation of a manageable list that you can tackle without feeling overwhelmed.
Once your list is complete, go back with a rough estimate of how long each of these items will take you. I find it helpful to plug “home projects” into my weekly schedule. Make this yours. Do you want to work on a certain project more than one day a week? Great! The key here is consistency, so if you have “home projects” on a Saturday, for example, when it is nearing the end of the week, create your plan for which items you want to accomplish on Saturday. Again, make this work for you!!
Consistency with decluttering is critical. Once you get into the groove, you will find motivation to go even further down your list. We all deserve to experience an environment that is pleasing to us. Enjoy the process… and the results!!
