Coaching Corner: Sanity vs. santatee

Coaching Corner: Sanity vs. santatee

Yes, the holidays are approaching quickly, as they seem to every year. Hanukkah begins December 16 with Christmas following soon after that. People are out, running to complete their holiday errands, as they seem to every year. And...many people are approaching a point of overwhelm from trying to accomplish everything that needs to be done, as they seem to every year. So is it possible to stay sane during this hectic and joyful time of the year? Might we start a new tradition so that in future years we will be able to comment that people are easing their way through the holiday season, as they seem to every year?

The holiday season is another one of those places where we can easily go into “automatic” mode -- shopping, putting up trees, baking cookies, etc., keeping traditions alive and well, with possibly one of those traditions being an assumption that it will be hectic and we will be stretched to our limit!

This year, I am wondering if you might be interested in creating a different type of experience for yourself. Are you willing to check inward to make sure that the activities you are participating in are the right ones for you? Are you willing to say no to a party or no to another piece of pie? Finding ways to support yourself through this time of year will allow you to move freely into 2015 without requiring a week off!!

Having clear conversations with yourself and then others about how you want this holiday season to be might be a great start. Be aware of activities you may have always done that no longer feel joyful. Be extremely discriminating about what you say yes to. Be creative -- find new ways to celebrate that do not tax you physically, emotionally or financially. Bottom line -- make this holiday season as joyful as possible -- if you run yourself ragged it is hard to be joyful!
