Coaching Corner: D is for...

Coaching Corner: D is for...

Today, I want to loop back to our earlier discussions regarding our wants and goals along with their appropriate actions. There have been several conversations I have had with clients lately around maintaining consistency with action steps, so it seems a good time to explore this subject.

So, let's assume you began your year with a clear vision of what your individual success would look like for you this year. You had the vision, the excitement and the plan! For several weeks you were nailing these steps and feeling pretty darn good about yourself and your accomplishments. But then, you seemed to fall off of the proverbial wagon, finding yourself in a position of self-judgement for not being able to continue with the same fervor that you started with. The types of situations I am addressing today are those that require ongoing actions, such as finding new business, or physical exercise.

First, let me tell you that finding yourself slowing down or stopping is a relatively normal occurrence that can certainly create angst if not faced head on. So, let's do just that -- face into this situation. And, for those of you who are still chugging along, please continue reading because it might be your situation next week!

My personal belief is that most of us are not born with an innate ability to carry out consistent actions. However, I also believe that we can learn to do this. First, however, you must have the DESIRE to accomplish the culmination of these consistent actions. Is this outcome something that you truly want? If so, why?

Once you have determined that you are lined up with your desire, it is a good time to outline the DEEDS (aka -- action steps!). Identifying exactly what you need to do in order to accomplish success is critical here. And, breaking them down into small, small steps is even more helpful.

Now you have your plan, so next up is your DEDICATION. You must be dedicated, otherwise known as being committed to your desire, and, more importantly, committed to the motivation propelling your desire. And, please know, that re-committing may need to happen daily, or even more often to get where you want to go.

Lastly, you need to be DETERMINED. You may from time to time find certain consistent actions to become mundane or even challenging. There are no promises from me that this will not occur. If it does, you need to go back to why you are performing these actions and re-dedicate yourself to this particular desire or goal.

Staying in a place of active self awareness will allow you to catch your pitfalls early on and to remedy them quickly. Remembering these “D's” and getting back to your plan will surely lead you to an “A”!
