Coaching Corner: Just stand there?

There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing - Aristotle

In going through life, there will be times when others will find reason to criticize you, it’s just the way it is. We have no control over what others think, or say about us. As I type, there is another great quote that I have rolling around in my head and it goes something like this: What others think of you is none of your business. Eek! That doesn’t feel exactly good, does it? When someone voices their negative opinion about us, we want desperately to push back, however, that will not get you anywhere but more miserable.

When you have criticism directed at you, here’s what I would like you to do. First, just let it settle in -- do not jump into any type of response. As the words move through you, see how you feel. There are times when someone’s criticism just does not resonate and it causes you to scratch your head in wonder. Hmm, I wonder where that came from? Great! You can easily move on from here.

If, on the other hand, you find your blood pressure rising, that is a good indication that there is something there for you to look at. Remember...every single situation gives you the opportunity to learn something about yourself and criticisms are no exception. Now the curiosity is different -- hmmm, I wonder what I need to learn from this?

So, back to our friend Aristotle, criticism is going to happen! So how do you want to live your life? In fear of what others think, or living full out from a place of integrity? It’s your call, and I hope you choose to jump into your life with every bit of yourself!
