Coaching Corner: Let's compare...or not!

Comparison….this is something that each of us do at some point or another. Personally, for a good part of my life, I would consider myself a master of this craft. This is not a skillset that I would brag about -- comparing typically serves no one. The type of comparison I am talking about is when we compare ourselves to others in whatever capacity we are observing. Trust me, it is very detrimental to our well being.

When I had my first set of twins, our pediatrician had a bit of a “come to Jesus” talk with me around how important it was to see my children as individuals, and to avoid comparison at all costs. Interestingly, I found it easy to do, and yet, I observed as the two of them jumped right into looking at the other with comparing eyes.

This week, pay attention to when you are drawing your own comparisons. It might occur during a conversation, watching a television show or just observing someone walking on the street. Are you finding yourself in a state of comparison? How are you seeing yourself in these situations? Greater than? Less than? In my experience, most people go to feeling less than someone else, and this is a very important piece to pay attention to. When we think less of ourselves, we operate in a more diminished capacity.

Check it out -- you might be surprised!!
