Coaching Corner: Eliminating mental clutter

Coaching Corner: Eliminating mental clutter

In talking to clients, I am finding this to be a prevalent issue that can create havoc within your life, both professionally and personally. It seems sometimes as if there is no way to stop the “monkey mind,” and definitely limits you from being in the present moment.

Here are some suggestions that might help:

  • Keep something with you to get new ideas out of your head — this could be a notebook of some kind, or you can record right on your phone as soon as you can. These ideas can be revisited at a time when you actually can focus further on them.
  • Create a detailed project list of tasks that you truly do want to accomplish, sooner or later. Work in baby steps — do not overwhelm yourself with trying to tackle too much at one time.
  • Pay attention to judgmental thoughts or “shoulds” that come up. Notice that you are having them and if you feel it is warranted to spend some time checking these out, note them in your book or record them for further investigation! Eventually, it's nice to get to the point where you can just notice them and move on!
  • Take deep, slow breaths and allow your mind to slow down naturally.

Our brains our incredible and finding ways to have them work better for us will create more ease and harmony in all aspects of our lives.
