Coaching Corner: Anything is Possible
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
Once a week, I come together with some of my female friends to play Mahjong, a game played with tiles to create a winning hand. There is quite the preparation to initiate each game, which includes mixing up the tiles, constructing your “wall,” etc. At the end of all of this, we end up with 13 tiles, face down, lying on our card, which shows the hands we are trying to achieve. This is my favorite part of the game, when we lift the card, flipping the tiles up onto our tray. This moment of anticipation for me is one of absolute excitement, knowing that any combination of tiles is possible. This may show an amazing hand, or perhaps several jokers! Truly, anything is possible. What a fun feeling.
How might I (and you) take that type of feeling into other parts of our lives? How can we be open to possibilities, rather than close out what might come to us, allowing ourselves to listen to thoughts that shut us down?
Do we tell ourselves that we won’t be successful or happy? “It’s just not in the cards for me,” I have heard some lament. Or, “that happens for others, but not for me.” Really? We each have the capacity to create possibilities in our lives, and it comes down to the stories we tell ourselves. What story are you telling?
Many, many people have faced incredible adversity and managed to maintain a healthy, happy attitude and grown from that experience. What if you told yourself that anything is possible? How does that feel? I am guessing substantially better than the previous statements above.
Today, be open to possibility. “What wants to happen?” is one of my favorite questions. Rather than blaming yourself or others, ask this question the next time you are facing a challenging situation, and continue to affirm that indeed ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!
