Coaching Corner: Oh Happy Day!
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
Next week is my oldest set of twins’ birthday - they were born in 1977, if you want to do the math! Each time I allow myself to think of the magnitude of this number, I have to laugh. It truly seems like yesterday when these two amazing humans came into my life, and yes, perhaps I am being a bit self-indulgent today, and there is a point to this story.
Having my oldest son at the age that they are prompts me in a big way to realize my own age. Let’s face the fact that each day we are all getting older. Not to sound morose, but it is a fact of life. Each of us will have an individual response to aging. For some, it may be disturbing, while for others, it may be a non-event.
Here is the big question: what is important for you to accomplish during your time on this earth? Let’s call them ‘deathbed goals’ for the sake of clarity. Hopefully, you do not tune this out just because of the magnitude of the topic. Hang with me! The idea is to identify those essential items that allow you to feel complete before you move on. Some like to think of these items as their “bucket list.” Whatever works for you.
One of mine was to publish a book, and if you are reading this, I am, in fact, close to achieving this particular intention. What would you like on your list? Give it some thought, no need to rush. Imagine looking back on your life and identifying what needs to happen for you to feel completely fulfilled. Ah yes! There is no right, no wrong, and certainly no competition. This is all yours, and it doesn’t even have to be shared.
Take some time with this one, and enjoy the process. And, I will enjoy celebrating the journey of my sons as they continue to grow - oh, happy day!
