250 Years of Home in Ohio

Homeownership took flight in Dayton, Ohio. Incorporated in 1805, Dayton grew from a small frontier town into one of Ohio's most influential cities, driven by innovation, industry and opportunity.

Originally established as a canal town, Dayton emerged as a national center for manufacturing and invention during the 19th century. The city was known for producing thousands of patents and home to many inventors, most notably the Wright Brothers.

Before the automobile became popular, Dayton was already investing in the future of its neighborhoods. Public transportation began operating decades before the city's first electric streetlights and paved roads, connecting downtown with growing residential areas. As workers gained the ability to live farther from factories and businesses, homeownership became increasingly attainable for working- and middle-class families, helping shape the neighborhoods that still define Dayton today.

Industry continued to fuel that growth. Companies like the National Cash Register (NCR) Corporation transformed Dayton into a manufacturing powerhouse, creating thousands of stable jobs that allowed generations of Ohioans to purchase homes, build equity and put down roots in their communities.

By the early 20th century, Dayton became an example of the growing American middle class, where homeownership became attainable for many families. Families found new opportunities to own homes beyond the city’s industrial core, laying out the foundation for generations of thriving communities throughout the Miami Valley.

As America celebrates 250 years, Dayton's story reminds us that the dream of home has always been powered by opportunity, strong communities and the people whose ideas helped build both.
