Coaching Corner: In Search of Fun
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
Currently, I am reading a book titled “The Fun Habit” written by Mike Rucker, PhD. You may be asking yourself why I might be reading such a book, and I am happy to share. Although I have great appreciation for my life, I have come to realize that I do not carve out much time to just have fun. The author goes into three obstacles that we as adults face when attempting to engage in more fun:
- “We’re conditioned as we age to believe that trying to have fun is childish, even inappropriate.”
- “We undervalue the mental and physical benefits of fun.”
- “We’re put off by the counterintuitive fact that fun for adults requires discipline, which sounds…well, not fun.”
Do you resonate with any, or all, of these obstacles? I notice that the third one hits home the most for me. So, now what do we do with this bit of awareness? That answer is not quite as easy as the question. How do I incorporate more fun into my daily life? The majority of what I do is fun for me. I am so fortunate that what I do as a career brings me joy. Does that then count as “fun time”? Let’s do this together - let’s commit to finding time each day for what we each deem to be fun. Most importantly, do not make this a “should”, otherwise it will cease to be fun. Enjoy!
