Coaching Corner: Break it Down!
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
Lately, I’ve noticed that many of my clients feel overwhelmed, both at work and at home. A simple way to help is to write down all your to-dos instead of keeping them in your head. I like using paper, but choose whatever works best for you.
I realize this may sound simple, but it really does make a big difference. The next step is, in my view, the most important for making things easier. As you look at each item, figure out every small step you need to take. Make sure you list them all.
For example, you might need to make a phone call or do some research. Whatever the task, break it down into smaller parts. I often see people list the big goal but skip the smaller steps needed to reach it. If you can, add a deadline for each item.
Decide how you would like to track your tasks, whether with a notebook, an Excel spreadsheet, or an app. The specific method is less important than choosing one you will use consistently. Once selected, begin your list and include every small step.
Have fun and enjoy getting things done!
