Coaching Corner: Accepting Joy

Coaching Corner: Accepting Joy

Beliefs are not typically in the forefront of our consciousness. They are most often unconscious, and the only clues we may get is in observing what is showing up in our physical reality.

Story time: on the day that I turned 50, I was in complete celebratory mode. I had a massage, received calls from friends and family both near and far, met with our kitchen designer at the house and got my haircut. My husband made reservations for dinner at a great restaurant that night, and a party was happening two days later! Fun, fun, and more fun!

As we completed the meeting with the kitchen designer, I remember thinking how incredible this day was and felt tremendous excitement about the new kitchen we were planning. My thoughts were filled with joy, and just that quickly I got into my car in the garage and promptly SMASHED into my husband's car which was parked in the driveway! Not a little smashwe both had damage to our cars.

Because of course... The day was going too well, right?

And this thought was a clear indication that I still held a belief somewhere that told me that I was having way too much fun and somehow that was not OK.

When we hit (sometimes literally) one of these places, we might self-sabotage the success, fun, or joy that we have been experiencing. So now, when I am in the midst of my desired success in whatever area of my life, I pay more attention. I might physically slow myself down, or do some breathing, in order to keep my awareness tuned in to all of the wonderful events and feelings happening for me.

So, today, I ask you, are you willing to accept joy? Even when other events try to bring you back down? You may get a strong YES to that question, or you may have some negative thoughts come forth.
