Ready-to-build housing plans are available for use in Akron

Ohio REALTORS^® is excited to announce that Akron has joined the growing list of cities within Ohio that are implementing pre-approved plans to address housing challenges!

The Made in Akron designs are intended to make it faster and more affordable to build homes in existing neighborhoods in the city. The off-the-shelf plans have 10 home designs for all homeowners' needs. 

Developed by Akron-based Grassroots Architecture in partnership with the City and Summit County Land Bank, the plans have been pre-reviewed through the Summit County Building Standards Department to help streamline the permitting and review process for builders and future homeowners.

Akron has also released a pattern book to explain the city's housing standards — where a home can sit on a lot, where garages should be placed, what rooflines should look like and how many windows there should be. This helps establish a clear design vision for new residential construction while drawing inspiration from the architecture and character of Akron’s existing neighborhoods.

Made in Akron is a broader effort to increase housing supply, expand housing choices and encourage reinvestment in Akron neighborhoods. The City has been working to address barriers to new housing development through various updates and tools.
