Coaching Corner: Schedule it!

Coaching Corner: Schedule it!

How often do you find yourself falling short with the activities that you say you want to do? This is a common complaint I hear from clients. It may be work related or personal -- either way, when we say we want to do something and it doesn't happen, it is worth looking at a little deeper, don't you think?

First, ask yourself if it truly is something that is a solid YES for you. This is such an important piece that I have written about before. Are you thinking that you “should” do it, or do you want to do it -- there is a big difference sometimes.

OK, so you have determined that indeed, you have an activity that is truly a YES for you. But...you still contend there isn't enough time for this chosen activity. I have been there so many times, as I am sure many of you have as well.

The only change that has created a shift in getting my “wants” done is that I now schedule them. For example, I have on my Saturday task list to schedule my workouts for the upcoming week. Actually, I have begun to go out even further so they are in my schedule. For other appointments, i.e. hair, etc., I am scheduled out for a few months at a time.

What about more work related items? You need to make this work for you -- one idea is to choose a day that typically seems to be on the lighter side and plan to do those work activities that are more projects than the day to day work. I have found that keeping Monday open for those types of activities works well for me. Again, this needs to work for you!

Make a list of those items that you want to make sure get done and see if any of them can be scheduled. Then for those other items, look at your calendar and get them scheduled in as well. If you do not take control of your time, believe me, someone else will!
