Coaching Corner: Half year resolutions

Coaching Corner: Half year resolutions

Jun 29, 2018

It’s hard to believe that we are already halfway into 2018! Time seems to move so much faster as I get older, which seems to generally be a common belief out there. At the halfway point of this year, let’s take a few minutes to check back to the onset of the year 2018 and any resolutions/intentions that you made for yourself. In thinking about being at this half year mark, I thought it would be fun to re-evaluate, checking to see if your intentions are still alive for you, or if they have gone to the graveyard of unaccomplished or irrelevant resolutions.

Either way is okay -- please do not judge yourself regardless of how well you have (or have not) brought your intentions into reality. All we are doing today is noticing and deciding where you want to go from here. In all honesty, it would probably be easier and more effective if we revisited our desired outcomes on a monthly basis -- going for the full year can often present some challenges. We may unintentionally forget what we said we wanted or, perhaps, find ourselves in a place of time constraints, keeping us from achievement.

Today, lets start fresh. If you have resolutions/intentions written down, from January 1, identify each in terms of how you feel about them right now. Is this something you find that you still want to accomplish? If not -- check it off your list! If so, are you on track for success? If there are changes that need to happen, make the changes. Are there new items that are piquing your interest? Get those down.

With your list thoughtfully identified, ask yourself the big question of “why” these items are important to you. Is the item on your list a true desire for you, or a “should?" How would the accomplishment of this item change your life? This doesn’t need to be a huge time commitment and is well worth the attention!

At this point, notice any resistance that arises for you. You may hear your thoughts spinning around, indicating the distinct possibility of failure. Pay attention!! When you try to drown out your internal thoughts, they will come back and kick you in the butt! Noticing is the key -- noticing without judgement. Go back to why this intention is important to you and continue to notice how you feel as you do. Let your renegade thoughts that, although you hear them, you are moving on.

Writing words down on paper are merely words, unless a feeling is generated from these words. Your desired intentions, when explored, need to create a good feeling place for you. That’s how you know you are on the right track.

Enjoy the process and Happy New Half Year!!
